Abstract:

The great San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was the first thoroughly studied earthquake in the
US, and among the first scientifically studied earthquakes in the world. Archival materials
associated with the study of the 1906 earthquake, such as old photographs, maps, correspondence,
and original reports, have provided essential information to several studies along the northern
San Andreas Fault. This presentation will review four study areas (Loma Prieta, San Francisco
Peninsula, Fort Ross, and Shelter Cove) where historical materials related to the 1906 earthquake
have played a key role in recent geologic studies of the northern San Andreas Fault.
